POWERSPORTS ATV TOUR MAKES INAUGURAL VISIT TO OLD DOMINION STATE; READY FOR DOUBLE CHAMPIONSHIP GBC VIRGINIA NATIONAL WEEKEND

The WPSA PowerSports ATV Tour makes its first visit to Virginia this weekend, as it hits Virginia Motorsports Park for the GBC Virginia National. The event, which features two full shows for the Pro Classes, representing Rounds 6 and 7 of the Tour, kicks off Friday with Pro qualifying. The race continues through Sunday, which will be highlighted by two complete Pro finals.

The events will be telecast on ESPN2 on Saturday, Aug. 18 at noon EDT, and again on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. EDT.

The racing weekend will feature the nation's top Pro riders, competing in three Classes: SuperQuad Pro 450, QuadTerrain Challenge Pro Stock, and SuperSport Side by Side. The SuperQuad Pro 450 Class features big air, motocross style racing.

QuadTerrain Challenge features larger, utility-type ATVs, competing on an obstacle course that includes log jams, mud bogs, rock crawls, as well as high-speed sections. The SuperSport Class comprises four-wheel utility vehicles piloted by a driver and co-driver, sitting side by side. The purpose-built racing machines compete on a modified course that includes both big-air sections, as well as obstacles.

The race weekend will also feature nearly 20 other classes for Pro Am, Amateur, Junior and Women's classes.

SuperQuad Pro 450
Following the last two races, held in Kentucky two weeks ago, the Suzuki triumvirate of Dustin Wimmer, Chad Wienen, and Doug Gust took command of the Riders' Championship. Wimmer (No. 191 MSR, Pro Taper, Yoshimura/Suzuki) leads the points chase, holding a nine-point margin on Wienen and Gust, who are in a numerical tie with 178 points.

Yet, as strong as the Suzuki squad has been, John Natalie, Jr. and his No. 13 Elka, Maxxis/Honda have remained competitive despite injuries sustained in crash last month in Illinois. Natalie, who is recovering from a torn ACL in his knee and severe injuries to his chest, has showcased his "Iron Man" riding style this season. Despite the injuries, he sits fourth in points, just five markers behind Wienen and Gust.

Keith Little (No. 12 Lonestar/Honda) is having what could only be considered a breakout season. After earning his first WPSA podium in Oklahoma, Little now sits fifth in points and well within the thick of the end-of-season battle.

Like its riders, Suzuki remains out front in the Manufacturers' Championship, sitting 18 points ahead of Honda.

Downing on kart racing's fast track

Darren Zary, The StarPhoenix

MARTENSVILLE -- When the Downing family rolls into the race track parking lot in a tiny and rustic red trailer, the Saskatoon kart racers look as intimidating as Little Red Riding Hood.

Look under the hood, however, and you'll see Logan Downing definitely has what it takes.

The lesson? Don't judge a racing kart by its cover.

Downing entered the fifth annual Toyota Saskatoon Kart Grand Prix during the weekend as the top racer on the Rotax Max Junior class circuit, a Western Canadian series.

His low-budget outfit is reaping success.

"They spend their money on the trailers and stuff," Logan says of other racers. "All our money is spent on race parts. That's all that matters." His dad, Stuart, in his 10th season in the sport, echoes those sentiments. "We don't tend to spend a lot of money on things that don't make the kart go fast.

"Our trailer and hauler gets our stuff to the track just the same as anybody else's.

"I remember when we went to our first big race. We went around all these $100,000 haulers (in the parking lot). We rolled in with a little $100 trailer. We're going, 'Holy, man, what are we doing here?' We went on the track and we knew why we were there." For Logan, this is his first year of Rotax Max junior racing. Last year, he competed in the Honda Jr. II category.

"I came in second overall in the point standings, just by 20 points. At mid-season, we had some bad luck and our engine just about failed us on the last race day. That sucked." Logan, 14, has been racing since he was 10 -- "so everybody got more of a start on me, but I caught up." "I just like the speed and how much finesse there is. If you're off, like a foot off the line, you'll lose two-tenths of a second." The keys to success, he says, are "focus and never quitting." "I'd like to get serious, but you need lots of money to move up in karting." The Saskatoon Grand Prix was the second of three events used to crown the Western Canadian champion in the Rotax class. The final meet is July 27-30 in Calgary.

The winner of the series gets to compete in the Rotax world championships at Dubai in November. The series has three classes: Rotax Max Senior (16 years and older), Rotax Max Junior (12-16 years) and Rotax DD2 (16-plus years).

Logan Downing is one lap closer to realizing every karter's dream.

"He's doing exceptionally well," said Stuart Downing. "I'm really proud of how he's doing. Coming from the Honda (junior II class), a little lower powered kart, and being thrown into these high-powered karts, he's really adapted well and it's really nice to see and the (Saskatoon Racing Club) is really behind him, too. They're just cheering them on.

"In a way, I'm a little surprised, but he just adapts to these karts. We were down in Regina with a different kart and he just adapted to them all. He picks up a track real quick.

"He's willing to change, with different driving lines and the way he approaches the corners. That really makes him get to the next level." Stuart is in his second season as a racer in the Rotax Max Senior class. He and Logan talk shop a lot.

Area duo shines on go-kart tracks

MANITOWOC — As the hum of 100cc engines fills the air, nearly 30 four-wheeled bundles of energy build momentum toward the starting line.

Appearing to hover just inches off the ground, the noise grows as accelerators are shoved down and the field — bunched tightly two-by-two — takes the green flag, speeds down the straightaway and toward the first corner.

"It's really scary going into the first corner," said Joel Jens, 11, of Manitowoc.

"You're all bunched up, going two-wide, doing 60 or 70, it gets ugly pretty fast," said Sage Wallace, 13, also of Manitowoc.

Such is the experience of a go-kart racer.

Both Manitowoc youths race regularly at USA International Raceway near Shawano — which recently hosted a national go-kart event that both racers were a part of — and both race out of Stock's X-Factor Racing through Stock's Harley Davidson of Manitowoc.

Wallace has been racing karts since the age of 10, while Jens joined the sport last season when both drivers were in the HPV Junior Sportsman class.

This year, Wallace has moved up to the HPV Juniors — go-kart racing is split up by engine classes (two and four cycles), age groups and weight — and is continuing to do something he truly enjoys.

"The adrenaline rush. That's probably the best part about it," Wallace said. "I had always been watching racing on TV and thought that's what I want to do. I wanted to be a race car driver."

Wallace got started racing with his dad, Chris, running a four-cycle go-kart at the Karting Kettles in Elkhart Lake. And the younger Wallace took to the sport immediately.

"His first race, he won both heats and took second in the feature — his very first night out," said Chris Wallace. "I bought a used kart for him and myself to do it together. We did it immediately that year, and later on in the year I bought a two-stroke HPV and started racing on my own up at Shawano."

The following year, the elder Wallace purchased a two-cycle go-kart for Sage to race up at Shawano. It was also around the time he met Dave Herrmann, the general manager of Stock's Harley Davidson, and found out the store known for its Harley Davidson motorcycles was also interested in go-karts.

"We got involved here, actually just really for the fun of it. I knew I would enjoy it and the owner, Dave Stock, knew he would enjoy it so we kind of got in it at the very bottom level not having any experience in it at all," Herrmann said. "We got the karts in and we set them up and went out and had some fun and thought we had them set up right and we didn't. Chris came along and said you have to do this, this, this and this and it will be a lot better and we tried that it made it better," Hermann added.

That began a partnership between Stock's and the elder Wallace, who was still racing his own go-kart.

But in trying to maintain his own go-kart and help his son improve his racing skills, it got to be too much to handle. So Chris Wallace jumped out of the car and focused solely on his son's racing.

"It just got to be too much for me," Chris Wallace said. "And when I hopped out and just started working with Sage, he improved dramatically."

According to www.sagewallace.com, Wallace was the HPV Junior Track Champion and won the Most Improved Driver Award at USA International Raceway in 2005, and then won the 2-Cycle Junior Track Championship and won the 2-Cycle Fast Time Award at the track last year.

"I guess I wanted to stay in it whether I was good at it or not," said Sage Wallace, whose Web site also lists Calibre and Dental City as sponsors, along with Stock's Harley Davidson and Stock's X-Factor Racing. "It's just something I wanted to do."

And with his dad staying off the track, the sponsorship from Stock's switched to the younger Wallace.

"Chris was the initial sponsorship and he asked if I could turn that into Sage being sponsored and (we said yes)," Herrmann said. "I figured that's the least that I can do with Chris coming in and helping us out so much."

Jens also got started with the help of his father, Mark, however, he wasn't following his parent on the track.

"I was at Stock's looking at go-karts for a long time and my dad would never get me one," Joel Jens said. "Then, for my birthday, he got me a go-kart and I just really wanted to race."

While racing up at USA International Raceway, the two Manitowoc drivers got to know each other and both Chris and Sage helped out Mark and Joel, respectively.

With the fathers, the assistance came in how to set up the go-kart for racing, while Sage gave Joel a first-hand look at how to run the track.

"Joel took a liking to it by following Sage," Mark Jens said. "Joel had the ability to pick it up at a faster rate because he was out there running behind someone who knows what they're doing. That helped a lot."

The two have been working together — with each having success — ever since.

"I enjoy seeing Joel succeed and seeing the things I've been able to teach Joel and his father and seeing Joel make those steps to the point where, at the club level, he's at the same level Sage was at last year," Chris Wallace said. "I enjoy being able to pass that information and help those if they want it."

Both drivers plan to continue to run the regular schedule USA International Raceway, which runs from April until October, this season as well as different Midwest Series and national series events throughout the Midwest.

One of those events came to Shawano in June where Jens turned in an impressive showing.

Despite having just a year of experience, Jens qualified seventh in his class, placed seventh in the pre-final and finished ninth out of 27 drivers overall.

"I really didn't think I was going to do that well," Jens said. "It was fun. I was just driving by myself and I got lucky when a couple people spun out."

But there's been more to racing than just turning laps on a track.

Both Mark and Joel Jens said Joel's grades in school have improved since taking up racing — "My dad says I have to work hard in school to race," Joel said, — and it also allows the families to spend time together, whether at the tracks, driving to a race or working on the karts.

"I think racing definitely carries over to being with family," Sage Wallace said. "The whole reason my dad and I got into was father-son bonding time."

And the thrill of charging down a straight-away at 75 mph, with a couple of dozen other drivers isn't bad either.

Kart racing can be a fun experience for all ages, skills

I love go-karting -- indoor or outdoor, around a road course or on a short-track oval.

I've been doing it since my mate Sergio and I ran a pretty primitive go-kart that his Uncle Johnny and his father, Mario, built on an abandoned airfield strip back home in Australia in the early 1960s.
We had planned to get some experience, win some races and go open-wheel racing in Europe. We were about 14 at the time.

Well, I missed the boat when it came to Europe, heading instead in the 1970s to America, marriage, a family and writing about auto racing for a living.

Sergio's go-karting days may be a distant memory, but mine are not yet over. The truth is you can run or race a go-kart at 10 years of age or 70. (Sergio: Take note.) Yes, it's tougher on the body at 58 -- my age -- than 18. But karting is for everyone, grandpas included.

Over the years, I've practiced and raced at Kart2Kart in Sterling Heights, an indoor center, and at Jackson Speedway in Jackson, where they hold an annual 24-hour event for charity -- the Hospice 24 -- on a really neat road course linked to an oval.

I've busted a few parts -- like ribs and a knee -- but I'll put that down to brittle bones and questionable skills. Go-karting is safe despite the high speeds and acceleration of these mighty midgets.

With helmets, neck collars, gloves, driving suits and rib protectors for those who want them, a lap around a racetrack like Jackson is probably one of the safest (and most thrilling) sports a boy or girl could participate in.

I recently returned to Michiana Raceway Park, near South Bend, for a test session with some of their rental race karts. Its sister track, Rolling Green Raceway, is across the border in Buchanan, in the southwest corner of Michigan.

MRP is a 6/10th-of-a-mile asphalt road course with every conceivable turn, from high-speed to hairpin. If you can run MRP, said marketing boss and driving coach Marc Miller, you can run any go-kart track.

For starters, they have a line of what's known as Rock karts for corporate, group or private racing school use.

Rocks they aren't, as these machines are capable of 50 m.p.h., which, with your butt two inches off the ground, feels more like 80.

If that doesn't do the trick and you want to step up the pace and g-forces, try the Yamahas, which are wickedly fast (65 m.p.h.) and nimble.

It gets better at MRP, where they have Rotax karts. Driving one is like being at the wheel of a turbocharged Porsche 911. All of a sudden a surge of power kicks in and you are running 75-80.

Costs for schools and rentals vary from track to track, based on karts used. At MRP, a three-hour Rock/Yamaha driving school is $250-$300. Buying a kart can cost $5,500 or more. Jackson Speedway, where speeds and equipment are not as cutting-edge, charges adults $200 for a five-week racing league and kids $100 for a four-week driving school.

At Kart2Kart, a 20-lap session indoors is $20, while you can run a two-hour endurance race for about $80 per driver. While the course is tricky, the karts used there are slower than those at MRP and Jackson. All costs include safety equipment.

While karting isn't cheap, I've never seen a person climb out of a go-kart with a frown. It's like keeping your eyes open when you sneeze.

You can't.

Polaris ATV All Terrain Vac

The ATV's impressive speed and effectiveness quickly clean floors and walls of in-ground pools. Built-in reverse drive frees it from obstacles and allows it to clean in reverse. Designed with an auxiliary inlet to keep water flowing even if the throat gets clogged. The flow regulator also optimizes and adjusts flow to the cleaner. Connects easily to pool skimmer or dedicated suction line.
